Space is everything for families residing in highly urbanized areas. With the increasing population in Metro Manila comes the decrease of land that can be developed, resulting in soaring demand for high-rise residential space and rise in cost per square meter of condominium units. More compact condo units have become the norm for families living in two- or three-bedroom units in the city, and making the most out of every inch of space, including the balcony, is an important consideration for their homes.

Some would begin by looking up space-saving design ideas for their new home, such as designating hidden storages under the bed or all around the kitchen, designing certain areas to serve multiple purposes, or choosing a color palette that would help create a visual illusion of a bigger space. Homeowners may not necessarily immediately think of the kind of air-conditioning (AC) system to install in their units, as this does not usually obstruct the design of the interiors.

However, homeowners tend to ignore that the AC system’s outdoor unit can eat up a considerable area in the balcony. A two-bedroom condo unit usually needs three conventional split-type ACs, which would mean having three outdoor units occupying valuable space in the balcony.

To enable residents to maximize their home space, Carrier has launched the Carrier Inverter Multi-Split System (IMS), a flexible system that allows a single outdoor unit to power up to four indoor units.

”If your condo unit has three 1.5 horsepower (hp) inverter hi-wall ACs, then you would be using up to 2.25 square meters of balcony space for a different brand’s outdoor condensing units,” explains Rajan Komarasu, Group Director of Concepcion Building and Industrial Solutions (BIS), which houses the Carrier, Toshiba, Midea, and Otis brands.

“On the other hand, one 4 hp Carrier IMS that can accommodate three to four indoor units would take up only 1.88 square meters of balcony space. For condo units in Makati, the space saved would translate to an estimate of more than Php 50,000.00 in savings compared to using single splits. This could mean having a balcony that is also a relaxing outdoor sanctuary, or serves as an extra space for accommodating guests, which can be very attractive to buyers,” Komarasu adds. For condominium units that have no balconies, the outdoor unit of the Carrier IMS can instead be supported by wall brackets.

The Carrier IMS uses the R-410A refrigerant, which does not contribute to ozone depletion and is currently the standard for air-conditioners globally. It is available in 2, 3, and 4 hp capacities. “The Carrier IMS is environment-friendly and offers greater efficiency. It saves 30% of energy compared to non-inverter AC systems,” notes Komarasu.
